Thalen vs Brain Training

Brain training vs
brain tracking.

Yes, we have ranks, progression, and celebrate your gains. But there's a difference: your Thalen Score reflects actual reaction time, working memory, and executive function. Not how good you are at matching shapes. We made measurement addictive, not just games.

The Core Difference

Why measurement beats training

The scientific consensus on brain training is clear: improvements don't transfer to real-world cognition. Thalen takes a different approach.

Measurement vs Training

Brain training apps measure how good you get at their games. Thalen measures your actual cognitive function using the same tests found in sleep labs and clinical research.

Research-Grade Tests

Our tests (PVT, N-Back, Stroop, DSST) have decades of peer-reviewed validation. Brain training games are proprietary with limited independent verification.

Track Real Changes

Want to know if that new supplement actually works? Or how sleep affects your performance? Thalen gives you objective data, not just a feeling that you're getting better at a game.

Gamification That Measures

Yes, we have ranks and progression too. But your 1650 Potent rank means something real: you're sharper than most humans. Not just good at matching shapes.

The Research

What science says about brain training

According to Gobet & Sala (2023), a second-order meta-analysis (a meta-analysis of meta-analyses) in Perspectives on Psychological Science concluded that cognitive training produces "null" far transfer effects. In plain terms: getting better at brain training games doesn't make you better at anything else.

"The overall effect of far transfer is null, and there is little to no true variability between the types of cognitive training."

This doesn't mean the games are useless for entertainment. But if your goal is to actually improve cognitive function, the evidence suggests you'd be better off with sleep, exercise, and stress management.

Thalen takes a different approach. Instead of claiming to train your brain, we give you tools to measure it. Track how sleep, supplements, time of day, and lifestyle factors actually affect your cognitive performance, with data you can trust.

What Ranks Mean

Your score reflects real cognitive function

Unlike brain training "levels" that measure game proficiency, Thalen ranks are calculated from clinically validated metrics: PVT reaction time, N-Back d-prime, Stroop interference, DSST throughput.

Fair Consideration

When brain training might make sense

Enjoyment

If you find brain games fun and relaxing, that has value. Entertainment doesn't need to "work" to be worthwhile.

Specific Populations

Some research shows benefits for specific groups (older adults with MCI, children with brain injury). Consult a healthcare provider.

Habit Formation

Daily brain games can be part of a morning routine that includes other cognitively beneficial activities.

Near Transfer

You will get better at the games themselves. If that progression feels rewarding, there's nothing wrong with that.
